If I need one that is. Lets say the GP gets totaled, with a budget of say $5000 (tops) what would you buy?
Requirements:
Lowish miles (Under 125,000)
Automatic (needs to go to my little sister after this summer)
Sedan/coupe preferred.
Options are limited, saw a decent RSX, a crazy cheap Ls430, and a nice I35, but overall options seem thin at best.

Boring, but definitely one I’m looking out for. Seem to rust more than the comparable’s in the midwest.

Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer.
Is this not the point at which we provide completely unreasonable answers and then feign personal offense when said answer is dismissed?

Don’t those have transmission problems?

I like this option. I’m sure others involved in this equation will not, but fuck them, they dont matter.

Another W-Body! Impalas are a dime a dozen.

A 1st gen Vibe/Matrix. Its not a sedan/coupe, but its better.
The front seat can do this:
The plastic cargo area is also really nice.
the rear glass can do this:
Just watch for the intake manifold gasket, the 1ZZ loves to eat them. You can find them >$5000 all day long.

2-3 gen Ferd Focus. Decent reliability and fairly stylish. Because I’m all ‘bout dat

I dunno. I’m sure under 125k miles it’s fine.

I don’t have a better answer than this

I’m just worried that a similar one would be trashed at this price point. Mine was much nicer than the others I’ve seen, but we’ve had it for 6+ years now.

Yeah but you’ll smash the fuck out of your third brake light loading a small loaf of bread with just the glass up. Source: third brake light held with wire on one side.

Very much yes.
Tough to find around here with low miles though unfortunately.

So true.

If it didn’t need to be automatic a not-bad Niva could be purchased and RORO’ed from St. Petersburg to NYC for that budget.

Don’t buy a RSX that isn’t a manual
![]() 12/27/2016 at 00:05 |

Do they have the paper weak auto transmissions too?
![]() 12/27/2016 at 00:08 |

No it just ruins the fun and pains me internally to see an auto RSX.
The auto’s in them are suppose to be okay

If there are any Subaru SVX or Dodge Stealth around then you can probably buy one of each with that budget. Lincoln LS is also doable. Hmmm, first gen Scion tC maybe?

Go for an LS400 or 430.

Don’t buy an automatic, just teach her to drive manual. We need to pass the skill along to future generations or it will be lost!

IS300.
I shall make this recommendation every time because its the only fun car I’ve owned and I liked it.

Saturn Astra hatchback. Not actually a good idea just the best thing I found that matched all the requirements. http://brainerd.craigslist.org/cto/5897753212.html

A Facebook friend just got one as a backup car for a problematic VW, so there’s that.

Teach your little sister to drive manual! Rsx is great, an ep3 civic is nice too (i know it’s a hatch). The cheap to run / fun too drive list under 3k is pretty thin

“Saab - Potentially more reliable than a VW.” Is a marketing slogan that could have saved the company I’m sure.

RSX: crap visibility, crap turning circle, slab sides, long doors make it a veritable dent magnet.

Lexus IS300. That was easy. NEXT!

If I can find one I’d totally be down.

Acura TL is the obvious choice but Accord Coupes with basically the same v6 are just as fast/fun. The 4 cylinder isnt bad ether. Parts are really cheap and honda reliability.

Miata. Manual. She needs to learn the ways also it will make her text less behind the wheel at least for a little while

These are a bit over 5k but I’m sure there is wiggle room as dealers are usually eager to move older used cars.
